Consumed Endurance (CE)-Measuring arm fatigue during air interaction

If you are working on air interactions or hand movements to interact remotely with a computer, or to make the next Augmented Reality (AR) gadget, then you will definitely find that interfaces such as air-air-air-air-air that is very tiring. And that is not a small problem. Known as the effect of gorilla arm, this phenomenon is one of the obstacles for the adoption of the initial touch interface.

At the 2014 Chi Conference in Toronto, we will present our research on how to measure arms fatigue unattractively and quantitatively. Our metric is called the durability consumed, and builds above the Rohmert biomechanical study of the time of resilience from the upper limbs [1]. Time of resistance is defined as the maximum amount of time that can maintain the level of contraction before requiring rest. Our metric, called Consumed Endurance (CE), is defined as the ratio between the time of interaction and the available durability time. The following video is a good preview from our upcoming presentation at Chi.
